Mishkat al-Masabih 1118
Abu Sa'id reported God’s Messenger as saying, “When there are three people one of them should lead them. The one among them most worthy to act as imam is the one who is most versed in the Qur’an.”
Muslim transmitted it. The tradition of Malik b. al-Huwairith has been mentioned in a chapter following that on the excellence of the adhan (Ch. 7a).
وَعَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا كَانُوا ثَلَاثَةً فليؤمهم أحدهم وأحقهم بِالْإِمَامِ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ» . رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ

Mishkat al-Masabih 1863
Abu Umama reported God’s messenger as saying,
"Son of Adam, to give away what you have extra is better for you and to withhold it is worse for you, but you are not blamed for having a sufficiency. Give first to those who are dependent on you.”

Ibn 'Abbas said he heard God’s messenger say,
“Any Muslim who gives a Muslim a garment to wear will be in God’s safe keeping as long as a shred of it remains on him.”

Jabir said God’s messenger forbade that a man should eat with his left hand, or walk with one sandal, or wrap himself completely in a garment, or sit in a single garment with his hands round his knees and uncover his private parts.

Mishkat al-Masabih 4530
‘Auf b. Malik al-Ashja‘i said:
In the pre-Islamic period we used to apply spells, and we asked God’s messenger how he looked upon that. He replied, “Submit your invocations to me. There is no harm in invocations so long as there is no polytheism in them.”

Jabir reported God’s messenger as saying:
"When one of you sees a vision which he dislikes he must spit on his left three times, seek refuge in God from the devil three times, and turn from the side on which he was lying."

He said that God’s Messenger disliked horses with shikal, which means a horse having a white mark on its right hind leg and left foreleg, or on its right foreleg and left hind leg.

Mishkat al-Masabih 3922
Abu Qatada told that when God's Messenger encamped at night on a journey he lay down on his right side, and when he encamped a little before morning he raised his forearm and placed his head on the palm of his hand.

Abu Huraira reported Gods Messenger as saying, “Whatever town you come to and stay in, your portion is in it; but whatever town disobeys God and His Messenger, a fifth of it goes to God and His Messenger and what remains is yours.”

Anas reported God's messenger as saying, "The last hour will not come till the cry `God, God' is not uttered in the earth." In a version he said, "The last hour will not come upon one who says, `God, God'."

Mishkat al-Masabih 5806
Anas told that when a man had asked the Prophet for enough sheep to fill the valley between two mountains and had been given them, he went to his people and said, "Accept Islam, my people, for I swear by God that Muhammad gives gifts to such an extent that there is no fear of poverty[*]."
*The translation depends on whether the verb is read as active or passive. The translation above takes it in the passive sense. If it is active, it means that the Prophet does not fear poverty.

وَعَن أنس إِنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسلم غَنَمًا بَيْنَ جَبَلَيْنِ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ فَأَتَى قَوْمَهُ فَقَالَ: أَي قوم أَسْلمُوا فو الله إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا لَيُعْطِي عَطَاءً مَا يَخَافُ الْفَقْرَ. رَوَاهُ مُسلم

Muslim ibn Nadhir said, "A man asked permission to enter from

Narrated Jabir bin Samura (rad):
A man asked the Prophet (saw), “Should I perform ablution after eating mutton?” He replied, “If you wish so”, he then asked, “Should I perform ablution after eating camel meat?” He (saw) said, “Yes”.

وَعَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا; { أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ اَلنَّبِيَّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -أَتَوَضَّأُ مِنْ لُحُومِ اَلْغَنَمِ? قَالَ: إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ: أَتَوَضَّأُ مِنْ لُحُومِ اَلْإِبِلِ ? قَالَ: نَعَمْ } أَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِم ٌ 1 .

Habib bin Maslamah (RAA) narrated, ‘I witnessed the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H.) give a quarter (of the war spoils) as an additional booty (to a Sariyah) when they gained booty on their way out to the fight, He also gave a third (of the war spoils) as an additional booty when they gained it on their way back. ‘Related by Abu Dawud, Ibn al-Garud, Ibn Hibban and Al-Hakim graded it as Sahih.
وَعَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةٍ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ: { شَهِدْتُ رَسُولُ اَللَّهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -نَفَّلَ اَلرُّبْعَ فِي اَلْبَدْأَةِ, وَالثُّلُثَ فِي اَلرَّجْعَةِ } رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ, وَصَحَّحَهُ ابْنُ اَلْجَارُودِ, وَابْنُ حِبَّانَ, وَالْحَاكِمُ 1 .

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah (RA):
Allah's Messenger (SAW) forbade selling a quantity of dates whose measure was unknown for a specified (known) quantity of dates.

Mishkat al-Masabih 15
Sufyan b. ‘Abdallah ath-Thaqafi reported that he said, "Messenger of God, say something about Islam concerning which I shall need to ask no one after you are gone.” (A version has "anyone else”.) He said, "Say, ‘I believe in God’, then keep to the straight path.”

Mishkat al-Masabih 424
‘Uthman said that God’s messenger performed each detail of ablution three times and then said, “This is how I perform ablution, how the prophets before me performed it, and how Abraham performed it.”
Razin transmitted these two traditions, but in his commentary on Muslim Nawawi declared the second to be weak.

Mishkat al-Masabih 1653
‘Abd ar-Rahman b. Abu Laila said that Zaid b. Arqam used to say “God is most great” four times over their dead at funerals, but once he said it five times. On being questioned about it he replied that God's messenger used to do so.

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ: كَانَ زَيْدُ بْنُ أَرْقَمَ يُكَبِّرُ عَلَى جَنَائِزِنَا أَرْبَعًا وَأَنَّهُ كَبَّرَ عَلَى جَنَازَةٍ خَمْسًا فَسَأَلْنَاهُ فَقَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يكبرها. رَوَاهُ مُسلم

Mishkat al-Masabih 2131
‘Uqba b. ‘Āmir reported God’s messenger as saying, “What wonderful verses have been sent down to-night! The like of them has never been seen. They are ‘Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn’ and ‘Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of men.’” (Qur’ān, 113 and 114).

وَعَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَلَمْ تَرَ آيَاتٍ أُنْزِلَتِ اللَّيْلَةَ لَمْ يُرَ مِثْلُهُنَّ قَطُّ (قل أعوذ بِرَبّ الفلق)
و (قل أعوذ بِرَبّ النَّاس)

Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying, “If anyone seeks the office of qadi among Muslims till he gets it and his justice prevails over his tyranny, he will go to paradise; but the man whose tyranny prevails over his justice will go to hell."

وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ طَلَبَ قَضَاءَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ حَتَّى يَنَالَهُ ثُمَّ غَلَبَ عَدْلُهُ جَوْرَهُ فَلَهُ الْجَنَّةُ وَمَنْ غَلَبَ جَوْرُهُ عَدْلَهُ فَلَهُ النَّار» . رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُد

Shurahbil bin Muslim said:

Sunan Ibn Majah 3941
It was narrated from Sa’d that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:
“Verbally abusing a Muslim is Fusuq (disobedience) and fighting

is Kufr.”

Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Muslim ibn Jundub from Aslam, the mawla of Umar ibn al-Khattab that Umar ibn al-Khattab decided on a camel for a molar, a camel for a collar-bone, and a camel for a rib.

Ka'b b. ‘Ujra reported God’s Messenger as saying, “There are certain remembrances the repeaters (or, performers)* of which after every prescribed prayer will never be caused disappointment:
‘Glory be to God’ thirty-three times, ‘Praise be to God’ thirty-three times, and ‘God is most great’ thirty-four times.”
* The transmitter gives this alternative, thus showing that he is not sure which word was used.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri told that when God’s Messenger saw a tendency among his companions to go to the back he said to them, “Come forward and follow my lead, and let those who come after you follow your lead. People will continue to keep to the back till God will put them at the back.”*
* This has been explained as referring to their being denied God’s grace, or their lacking rank or knowledge. But cf. the tradition from 'A’isha at the end of Section III.

Anas told that the Prophet wrote to Kisra, Qaisar, the Najashi, and every powerful man, summoning them to God, but it was not the Najashi on whom the Prophet invoked a blessing.*
* It says that the Najashi (Negus) of Abyssinia to whom this letter was sent was not the same as the one who ruled at the time when the early emigration from Mecca to Abyssinia took place.

Mishkat al-Masabih 5845
`Ubada b. as-Samit said that when the inspiration descended on the Prophet, he was distressed on account of that and his face was altered to a dark hue. A version says, he lowered his head and his companions lowered their heads; then when it was removed from him, he raised his head.

Ibrahim at-Taymi reported that his father said, "We were sitting

Wa'il Al-Hadrami narrated that Tariq bin Suwaid asked the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) about Khamr which he made only to be used as a medicine. The Prophet (PBUH) replied, "It is not a medicine, it is a disease." Related by Muslim and Abu Dawud.
وَعَنْ وَائِلٍ اَلْحَضْرَمِيِّ; أَنَّ طَارِقَ بْنَ سُوَيْدٍ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا { سَأَلَ اَلنَّبِيَّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -عَنْ اَلْخَمْرِ يَصْنَعُهَا لِلدَّوَاءِ? فَقَالَ:

Narrated Ibn 'Umar (RA):

Mishkat al-Masabih 1650
‘Ali said, “We saw God’s messenger stand up so we stood up; he then sat down and we sat down,” the reference being to a funeral.
Muslim transmitted it. The version of Malik and Abu Dawud says, “He stood up for a funeral, then sat down afterwards.”(There is some doubt as to whether this means that he sat down after the funeral had passed, or whether the point is that the Prophet’s practice had been to stand up but that he later stopped doing so. Cf. the tradition from ‘Ali on p. 353)

Jabir said:
My maternal aunt was divorced by three utterances of the divorce and wanted to cut down fruit from her palm-trees, but a man forbade her to go out, so she went to the Prophet and he said, “Certainly, cut down fruit from your palm-trees, for perhaps you may give sadaqa or do an act of kindness.”

وَعَن جابرٍ قَالَ: طُلِّقَتْ خَالَتِي ثَلَاثًا فَأَرَادَتْ أَنْ تَجُدَّ نَخْلَهَا فَزَجَرَهَا رَجُلٌ أَنْ تَخْرُجَ فَأَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: «بَلَى فَجُدِّي نَخْلَكِ فَإِنَّهُ عَسَى أَنْ تَصَّدَّقِي أَوْ تَفْعَلِي مَعْرُوفا» . رَوَاهُ مُسلم
