Three-Narrator Ahadith 84
Ismāʻīl narrated to us:
ʻAbd al-ʻAzīz ibn Ṣuhayb narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a ring made and said, ‘We have had a ring made and have had an inscription engraved upon it, so let no one else have this inscription engraved.’”

| Grade: | Ṣaḥīḥ |
Musnad Aḥmad 3/101, no. 11989. Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. It is recorded by al-Bukhārī (Ṣaḥīḥ, no. 5874) and Muslim (Ṣaḥīḥ, no. 2092). Other sound variants specify that the ring was silver and bore the inscription: Muḥammad Rasūl Allāh, arranged over three lines. The instruction not to reproduce its inscription was connected to its function as the Prophet’s ﷺ official seal for correspondence and authentication; it is not a general prohibition against wearing a ring, using a silver signet ring, or writing the shahādah.
