مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 85
Ismāʿīl narrated to us:
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Ṣuhayb narrated to us, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to make his prayer brief, yet complete."

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ صُهَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوجِزُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُكْمِلُهَا.

Chain: Aḥmad ← Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ← ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Ṣuhayb ← Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) ← the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Miqsam al-Asadī, known as Ibn ʿUlayyah (d. 193 AH): thiqa ḥāfiẓ; a leading Baṣran imām of ḥadīth and fiqh, held in the highest regard by Imam Aḥmad, though early in his life he was associated with the Muʿtazila before repenting of it. (2) ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Ṣuhayb: same chain as the preceding ḥadīth. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: same as Ḥadīth 54. Takhrīj: Musnad Aḥmad, vol. 3, p. 101. Compare the companion report immediately following in this collection, in which Anas describes the Prophet ﷺ as "of all people, the one who offered the most complete prayer, and the briefest" — the two reports affirm the same quality from complementary angles: brevity that never came at the expense of the prayer's proper completion (recitation, tranquility, and the fulfillment of every pillar), refuting any notion that speed and spiritual presence are in tension in the Prophet's ﷺ example.
