Musnad Aḥmad 3/101, no. 11978. Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. It is recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (no. 5846) and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (no. 2101). Tazaʿfara denotes applying saffron to oneself or one’s clothing as perfume or dye; it does not concern saffron used as a food ingredient. The jurists differed over whether the prohibition is principally due to saffron’s fragrance, its conspicuous yellow coloring, or its association with women’s adornment; at minimum, it establishes that an adult Muslim man should not use saffron as personal adornment.
