Three-Narrator Ahadith 73
Ismāʻīl narrated to us from ʻAbd al-ʻAzīz, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “None of you should wish for death because of some harm that has befallen him. If he must wish for it, let him say, ‘Allāhumma aḥyinī mā kānat al-ḥayātu khayran lī, wa tawaffanī idhā kānat al-wafātu khayran lī’ (O Allah, keep me alive so long as life is better for me, and take me when death is better for me).”

Musnad Aḥmad 3/101, no. 11979. Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. All transmitters are reliable, and the report is recorded by al-Bukhārī (Ṣaḥīḥ, no. 6351) and Muslim (Ṣaḥīḥ, nos. 2680-2681). In another authentic wording, the Prophet ﷺ gave the reason for the prohibition: a righteous person may live longer and increase in good, while a sinful person may live longer and repent. The prohibition concerns wishing for death because of worldly harm or affliction; it does not negate the permissibility of asking Allah for death when one genuinely fears a trial that will compromise one’s religion, as indicated by other established Prophetic supplications.
