Three-Narrator Ahadith 6
Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) reported:
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to take the pledge of allegiance on [the vow to] hear and obey, then say: ‘Within your capacity.’ And in another narration: ‘...prompting each one of us to say: “Within your capacity.”‘

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُبَايِعُ عَلَى السَّمْعِ، وَالطَّاعَةِ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ: «فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتَ»، وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: فَيُلَقِّنُ أَحَدَنَا: «فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتَ.»

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 4565).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār ← ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (same chain as Ḥadīth 1). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ. ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār: thiqah. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, nos. 7202, 7205; Muslim, no. 1867; Abū Dāwūd, no. 2954; al-Nasāʾī, no. 4154. The addition “within your capacity” (fīmā istaṭaʿt) is a merciful qualification the Prophet (ﷺ) appended to the pledge, acknowledging human limitation and aligning the bay’a with the Qurʾānic principle: “Allāh does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear” (al-Baqara, 2:286).
