Three-Narrator Ahadith 5
Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“When you are three [in a gathering], let not two converse privately excluding the third.” And in another narration: “The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited two men from holding a private conversation to the exclusion of a third, when they are three.”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِذَا كُنْتُمْ ثَلَاثَةً، فَلَا يَتَنَاجَ اثْنَانِ دُونَ الثَّالِثِ»، وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: «إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، نَهَى أَنْ يَتَنَاجَى الرَّجُلَانِ دُونَ الثَّالِثِ، إِذَا كَانُوا ثَلَاثَةً.»

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 4564).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār ← ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (same chain as Ḥadīth 1). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ. ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār: thiqah. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, no. 6290; Muslim, no. 2183; Abū Dāwūd, no. 4851; al-Tirmidhī, no. 2825. Imām Mālik reports a related account in al-Muwaṭṭaʾ on the authority of ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār in which Ibn ʿUmar, finding himself alone with one other man at Khālid ibn ʿUqba’s home and seeing a third man approach, called a fourth to join them so that none of the three would be excluded from the conversation, citing this very prohibition. The Qurʾān also addresses the matter: “Secret counsels are only inspired by Shayṭān in order that he may cause grief to the believers” (al-Mujādila, 58:10).
