Three-Narrator Ahadith 4
Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“When a Jew greets you [with a salutation], he is actually saying al-sāmu ʿalayk (‘death be upon you’), so say: ‘Wa ʿalayk (and upon you).’“ And on another occasion he said: “When the Jews greet you, say: ‘Wa ʿalaykum,’ for they are saying al-sāmu ʿalaykum.”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، سَمِعْتُهُ مِنَ ابْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكَ الْيَهُودِيُّ، فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ، فَقُلْ: وَعَلَيْكَ»، وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: «إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَهُودُ فَقُولُوا: وَعَلَيْكُمْ، فَإِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ.»

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 4563).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār ← ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (same chain as Ḥadīth 1). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ. ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār: thiqah. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar: Companion. Here Sufyān explicitly states he heard it from Ibn Dīnār directly (samiʿtuhu min ibn Dīnār). Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, no. 6257; Muslim, no. 2164; Abū Dāwūd, no. 5207; al-Tirmidhī, no. 1603; al-Nasāʾī, al-Sunan al-Kubrā, no. 9989. According to Ibn ʿUthaymīn, if a non-Muslim greets a Muslim clearly with the correct Islamic greeting, it is permitted to return it with wa ʿalaykum al-salām, or simply wa ʿalayk; if uncertain of what was said, one responds with wa ʿalaykum only (Fatāwā, vol. 2, pp. 97-98).
