Three-Narrator Ahadith 55
Hushaym narrated to us:
ʻUbaydullāh ibn Abī Bakr informed us from Anas, and Yūnus from al-Ḥasan, both saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or one who is oppressed.” It was said, “Messenger of Allah, I help him when he is oppressed, but how do I help him when he is an oppressor?” He said, “You restrain him and hold him back [from wrongdoing], for that is helping him.”

Musnad Aḥmad 3/99, no. 11949. The first isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim; the second is mursal.
Al-Ḥasan is Abū Saʻīd al-Ḥasan ibn Abī al-Ḥasan Yasār al-Baṣrī, the freed client of Zayd ibn Thābit. He was born in Madīnah two years before the end of the caliphate of ʻUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and later settled in Baṣrah. He narrated from a number of the Prophet’s companions, and it is said that he met one hundred and thirty of them. His narration from the Prophet ﷺ here is mursal, since he did not hear directly from him.
