its isnād sound according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Chain: Hushaym ibn Bashīr → ʿUbaydullāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Anas → his grandfather Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ.
Rijāl: (1) Hushaym ibn Bashīr ibn al-Qāsim al-Sulamī al-Wāsiṭī (d. 183 AH): thiqa thabt, though frequently given to tadlīs and hidden irsāl; here he declares direct reception (akhbaranā), so the concern is removed. (2) ʿUbaydullāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Anas ibn Mālik al-Anṣārī al-Baṣrī: thiqa. (3) Anas ibn Mālik ibn al-Naḍr al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī (d. 93 AH): Companion, servant of the Prophet ﷺ for ten years, and the grandfather of the preceding narrator.
Takhrīj: Musnad Aḥmad, vol. 3, p. 98. Recorded by al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ, Kitāb al-Istiʾdhān, no. 6258, and by Muslim, Ṣaḥīḥ, Kitāb al-Salām, no. 2163, both from Anas ibn Mālik. Parallel narrations from Ibn ʿUmar and ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with them) explain the ruling: certain Jews of Madīnah would substitute al-sām (death) for al-salām, and the believers were therefore instructed to return only wa ʿalaykum. The majority of scholars accordingly hold that the reply is restricted to this formula, while others permit a fuller response where no such distortion is intended.
