isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 14308).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← ʿAmr ibn Dīnār ← Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (same chain as Ḥadīth 31). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. ʿAmr ibn Dīnār: thiqah ḥāfiẓ. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, nos. 3029, 3030; Muslim, no. 1739; Abū Dāwūd, no. 2636; al-Tirmidhī, no. 1675; Ibn Mājah, no. 2833. This statement was made by the Prophet (ﷺ) in the context of the Battle of the Trench (al-Khandaq) when Nuʿaym ibn Masʿūd offered to sow discord between the tribes opposing the Muslims, a strategy the Prophet (ﷺ) approved, saying “War is deception.” Scholars explain that legitimate military deception (khudʿa) is permitted in wartime, such as misdirecting the enemy or concealing one’s plans, unlike treachery (ghaddr), which involves breaking a pledge or covenant and is absolutely prohibited (see Muslim, no. 1740).
