Three-Narrator Ahadith 35
Jābir (رضي الله عنه) reported:
“A man entered the mosque on Friday while the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Friday sermon (khuṭbah). The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him: ‘Have you prayed?’ He said: ‘No.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Pray two rakʿahs.’”

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 14309).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← ʿAmr ibn Dīnār ← Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (same chain as Ḥadīth 31). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. ʿAmr ibn Dīnār: thiqah ḥāfiẓ. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, nos. 930, 1166; Muslim, no. 875; Abū Dāwūd, no. 1115; al-Tirmidhī, no. 510; al-Nasāʾī, no. 1393; Ibn Mājah, no. 1112. This ḥadīth establishes the sunnah of the two rakʿahs of taḥiyyat al-masjid (greeting the mosque) even for the latecomer who enters during the Friday khuṭba. It is one of the evidences for the permissibility of prayer during the sermon for this specific purpose, and scholars have used it to reconcile the general obligation of silence during the khuṭba with this exception. The Prophet’s (ﷺ) interrupting his own sermon to address the man demonstrates that correcting a religious practice takes priority even mid-sermon.
