Three-Narrator Ahadith 309
Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah reported:
I saw ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Umm Ḥarām al-Anṣārī (may Allah be pleased with him), who had prayed with the Prophet ﷺ toward both qiblahs, wearing a dust-colored garment of khazz. Ibrāhīm gestured with his hand to his own shoulders, and Kathīr [ibn Marwān] took this to mean it was a riḍāʾ (upper wrap).

| Grade: | Ṣaḥīḥ |
The matn is ṣaḥīḥ (established through numerous other chains, the fact of the Companions having prayed toward two qiblahs being mutawātir), but this particular isnād is weak
Chain: Kathīr ibn Marwān Abū Muḥammad → Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah → witnessed directly, describing ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Umm Ḥarām al-Anṣārī (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Kathīr ibn Marwān al-Fazārī: judged matrūk (discarded) by several critics including Ibn Ḥajr, the isnād's point of weakness. (2) Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah Shimr al-Maqdisī: thiqah, a noted Syrian scholar. (3) ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Umm Ḥarām al-Anṣārī: Companion who witnessed the change of qiblah from Jerusalem to the Kaʿbah while himself already in prayer. Takhrīj: The core report of Companions changing direction mid-prayer upon hearing news of the qiblah change is found in al-Bukhārī and Muslim, through the well-known hadith of the people of Qubāʾ; this particular version, transmitted solely for its added biographical detail about the garment worn by ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr, survives chiefly in Musnad Aḥmad due to Kathīr ibn Marwān's weakness. Khazz is a fabric understood to combine wool with some silk.
