مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُسْرٍ الْمَازِنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 301
Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān reported:
I asked ʿAbdullāh ibn Busr, Companion of the Prophet ﷺ, “Was the Prophet ﷺ an old man?” He said, “He was more youthful than that, but he had, in his beard, or perhaps he said in his ʿanfaqah, a few white hairs.”

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَرِيزُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ بُسْرٍ صَاحِبَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْخًا؟ قَالَ: «كَانَ أَشَبَّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، وَلَكِنْ كَانَ فِي لِحْيَتِهِ - وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ فِي عَنْفَقَتِهِ - شَعَرَاتٌ بِيضٌ

Chain: Aḥmad → Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim al-Laythī → Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān → ʿAbdullāh ibn Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim al-Laythī, Baghdādī: thiqah thabt, d. 207 AH. (2) Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān, (3) ʿAbdullāh ibn Busr: as above. Takhrīj: Muslim; al-Tirmidhī, al-Shamāʾil al-Muḥammadiyyah, a fourth chain, notable for the narrator's own doubt (wa-rubbamā qāla) as to whether the white hairs were mentioned in the beard or specifically the ʿanfaqah, illustrating the fine-grained precision (ḍabṭ) with which early narrators preserved even their own uncertainties rather than resolving them. Note: Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim is the same narrator who appears again below, there named simply "Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim."
