مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا
Three-Narrator Ahadith 271
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported:
I never knew the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to deliberately fast a day seeking its virtue over other days, except the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, and this month, Ramaḍān.

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي يَزِيدَ مُنْذُ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ: «مَا عَلِمْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَامَ يَوْمًا يَتَحَرَّى فَضْلَهُ عَلَى الْأَيَّامِ غَيْرَ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ، وَهَذَا الشَّهْرَ شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ

Chain: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah → ʿUbaydullāh ibn Abī Yazīd → ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with both of them), with Sufyān noting he had heard this from ʿUbaydullāh some seventy years before narrating it, a striking indication of Sufyān's own great age and the remarkable length of his transmission career. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah ibn Mīmūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī (d. 198 AH); thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. (2) ʿUbaydullāh ibn Abī Yazīd al-Makkī: thiqah. (3) ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās: a Companion, cousin of the Prophet ﷺ and the foremost scholar of Qurʾānic exegesis among the Companions, known as Ḥabr al-Ummah ("the scholar of the community"); died 68 AH in al-Ṭāʾif. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī (2006); Muslim (1132). Commentary: This ḥadīth establishes that among all voluntary fasts, only ʿĀshūrāʾ and the entire month of Ramaḍān were singled out by the Prophet ﷺ for their particular virtue in a manner he consistently prioritized above all other days, Ramaḍān being obligatory and ʿĀshūrāʾ remaining a strongly recommended sunnah after the obligation of Ramaḍān was legislated.
