مُسْنَدُ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ رُوَيْبَةَ الثَّقَفِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 270
ʿUmārah ibn Ruwaybah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he saw Bishr ibn Marwān upon the pulpit, raising his hands and gesturing with both index fingers while supplicating, and said, “May Allah curse these two hands, I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon the pulpit, supplicating, gesturing with only one finger.”

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حُصَيْنٌ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ رُوَيْبَةَ، أَنَّهُ رَأَى بِشْرَ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ رَافِعًا يَدَيْهِ يُشِيرُ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ يَدْعُو، فَقَالَ: «لَعَنَ اللَّهُ هَاتَيْنِ الْيُدَيَّتَيْنِ، رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَدْعُو وَهُوَ يُشِيرُ بِإِصْبَعٍ

Chain: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl → Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān → ʿUmārah ibn Ruwaybah (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl ibn Ghazwān al-Ḍabbī: ṣadūq, some critics noting a mild leaning attributed to him without affecting his reliability in ḥadīth. Died 195 AH. (2) Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī: thiqah, though his memory changed somewhat toward the end of his life; narrations from before that change, as here, are accepted without reservation. (3) ʿUmārah ibn Ruwaybah: ʿUmārah ibn Ruwaybah al-Thaqafī; Companion (Ṣaḥābī) who later settled in Kūfah. Takhrīj: Muslim (874). Commentary: This ḥadīth is the primary evidence relied upon by scholars for the sunnah of raising only the index finger of the right hand, and no other, while making supplication upon the pulpit or elsewhere, ʿUmārah's public rebuke of Bishr ibn Marwān, a governor of the day, for using both hands and both index fingers, exemplifies the Companions' willingness to correct even those in authority when their practice diverged from the Prophet's ﷺ own example.
