Three-Narrator Ahadith 258
Muḥammad ibn Ḥāṭib al-Jumaḥī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “What distinguishes the lawful from the unlawful [in marriage] is the tambourine and the [public] sound in the marriage [celebration].” [It is also related by Shuʿbah, from Abū Balj, that he said:] I said to Muḥammad ibn Ḥāṭib, “I have married two women without the tambourine being beaten for me.” He said, “How poorly you have done! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘What distinguishes the lawful from the unlawful is the sound’ “ — meaning the beating of the tambourine. Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 258
