مُسْنَدُ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 257
Al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported — Sufyān once qualifying it with “if Allah wills” — that the Prophet ﷺ wore two coats of mail, one over the other, on the Day of Uḥud; Sufyān narrated it another time without that qualification.

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ خُصَيْفَةَ، عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ - إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ - «أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ ظَاهَرَ بَيْنَ دِرْعَيْنِ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ» وَحَدَّثَنَا بِهِ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فَلَمْ يَسْتَثْنِ فِيهِ

Chain: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah → Yazīd ibn Khuṣayfah → al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Sufyān: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah ibn Mīmūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī (d. 198 AH); thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. (2) Yazīd ibn Khuṣayfah al-Kindī: thiqah. Died c. 132 AH. (3) Al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd: al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd al-Kindī; Companion (Ṣaḥābī) who performed the Farewell Pilgrimage as a boy; said by some to be the last Companion to die in Madīnah, c. 91 AH. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī (2917 and elsewhere); also referenced in the sīrah literature describing the Prophet’s ﷺ battle preparation at Uḥud. Commentary: Sufyān’s own scrupulous qualification — narrating it once with “in shāʾ Allāh” out of caution regarding his precise memory of the wording, then later without it once satisfied of his recollection — is itself a small but telling example of the meticulousness the ḥadīth transmitters exercised even in minor matters of wording, let alone substance.
