Three-Narrator Ahadith 253
ʿAbdullāh ibn Sarjis (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out on a journey, he would say:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a sorrowful return, from deviation after firm standing, from the supplication of the wronged, and from an ill-fated sight in family and property.”

Chain: Yazīd ibn Hārūn → ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal → ʿAbdullāh ibn Sarjis (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Yazīd ibn Hārūn: Yazīd ibn Hārūn ibn Zādhān al-Wāsiṭī (d. 206 AH), thiqah mutqin, here noted as having first heard this particular report recited by Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj (a testament to his scrupulousness — he declined to write down what he heard directly from ʿĀṣim until he could confirm the wording through Shuʿbah, celebrated as “the Commander of the Believers in Ḥadīth” for his rigor). (2) ʿĀṣim ibn Sulaymān al-Aḥwal: thiqah. Died 142 AH. (3) ʿAbdullāh ibn Sarjis al-Muzanī: a Companion who later resided in Baṣrah. Takhrīj: Muslim (1342); Abū Dāwūd (2599); al-Tirmidhī (3439); al-Nasāʾī (5502). Commentary: This is among the most comprehensive of the Prophet’s ﷺ travel supplications, seeking refuge from five distinct hardships: the physical toil of travel, a disappointing outcome upon return, spiritual or worldly reversal, the potent prayer of one who has been wronged (which the Prophet ﷺ elsewhere warned “has no veil between it and Allah”), and finding one’s family or property in a distressing state upon return.
