مُسْنَدُ عُرْوَةَ الْبَارِقِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 252
ʿUrwah al-Bāriqī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses [dedicated to jihād].” [Shabīb al-Bāriqī, the sub-narrator, added:] And I saw seventy horses in his quarters.

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْبَارِقِيُّ شَبِيبٌ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُرْوَةَ الْبَارِقِيَّ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «الْخَيْلُ مَعْقُودٌ فِي نَوَاصِيهَا الْخَيْرُ» وَرَأَيْتُ فِي دَارِهِ سَبْعِينَ فَرَسًا

Chain: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah → Shabīb ibn Gharqadah al-Bāriqī → ʿUrwah al-Bāriqī (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Sufyān: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah ibn Mīmūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī (d. 198 AH); thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. (2) Shabīb ibn Gharqadah al-Bāriqī al-Kūfī: thiqah. (3) ʿUrwah ibn al-Jaʿd (or ibn Abī al-Jaʿd) al-Bāriqī: a Companion known for his skill and blessing in trade, famous for the account of buying two sheep on the Prophet’s ﷺ behalf and returning with one sheep and a profit. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī (2850, 2851); Muslim (1871); al-Nasāʾī (3563). Al-Bukhārī’s version adds the explanation that goodness will remain tied to the forelocks of horses used in jihād until the Day of Resurrection, since they bring either heavenly reward or worldly gain.
