مُسْنَدُ نُبَيْطِ بْنِ شَرِيطٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 251
Nubayṭ ibn Sharīṭ (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported, through his son Salamah, to have said:
My father, my grandfather, and my paternal uncle were with the Prophet ﷺ. My father told me, “I saw the Prophet ﷺ delivering a sermon on the afternoon of ʿArafah, on a red camel.” Salamah said: My father advised me regarding the pre-dawn prayer; I said, “Father, I cannot manage it.” He said, “Then at least observe the two rakʿahs before Fajr — never abandon them, and do not go out seeking or taking part in fitnah.”

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَبُو يَحْيَى الْحِمَّانِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ نُبَيْطٍ قَالَ: كَانَ أَبِي وَجَدِّي وَعَمِّي مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي قَالَ: «رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ عَشِيَّةَ عَرَفَةَ عَلَى جَمَلٍ أَحْمَرَ». قَالَ: قَالَ سَلَمَةُ: أَوْصَانِي أَبِي بِصَلَاةِ السَّحَرِ، قُلْتُ: يَا أَبَةْ، إِنِّي لَا أُطِيقُهَا، قَالَ: «فَانْظُرِ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ فَلَا تَدَعَنَّهُمَا، وَلَا تَشْخَصْ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ»

Chain: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī → Salamah ibn Nubayṭ ibn Sharīṭ → his father Nubayṭ ibn Sharīṭ (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī: criticized by several ḥadīth scholars as weak, which is the chief cause of this chain’s weakness. (2) Salamah ibn Nubayṭ ibn Sharīṭ: Salamah ibn Nubayṭ ibn Sharīṭ al-Ashjaʿī; graded variously — ṣadūq by some, weak by others. (3) Nubayṭ ibn Sharīṭ: Nubayṭ ibn Sharīṭ al-Ashjaʿī; Companion (Ṣaḥābī) who performed the Farewell Pilgrimage with the Prophet ﷺ. Takhrīj: the account of the Farewell Sermon on a red camel corroborates the well-established descriptions found in Muslim (1218); the counsel to never abandon the two sunnah rakʿahs before Fajr is separately and soundly established in al-Bukhārī (1169) and Muslim (723) from ʿĀʾishah; and the warning against involvement in fitnah echoes numerous sound aḥādīth on withdrawing from political and social discord, such as those collected in al-Bukhārī’s Kitāb al-Fitan.
