مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 241
ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I asked him, “Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ carry out stoning [as a punishment]?” He said, “Yes, [in the case of] a Jewish man and a Jewish woman.” I asked, “Was that after the revelation of Sūrat al-Nūr, or before it?” He said, “I do not know.”

Chain: Hushaym ibn Bushayr → Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī → ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Hushaym: Hushaym ibn Bushayr al-Wāsiṭī (d. 183 AH); thiqah thabt, though he practiced a subtle tadlīs (al-taswiyah); accepted where he states he was informed, as here. (2) Al-Shaybānī: Abū Isḥāq Sulaymān ibn Abī Sulaymān al-Shaybānī (d. 140 AH); thiqah, a reliable narrator of Kūfah. (3) Ibn Abī Awfā: ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā; Companion (Ṣaḥābī); one of the Companions of the Tree (Bayʿat al-Riḍwān) and the last Companion to die in Kūfah, 86–87 AH. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Muḥāribīn, bāb rajm al-yahūd wa ahl al-dhimmah (6841); with fuller versions in al-Bukhārī (3635) and Muslim, Kitāb al-Ḥudūd (1699), narrated from Ibn ʿUmar, describing how the Prophet ﷺ ordered the stoning of a Jewish couple who had committed adultery, applying to them the ḥadd punishment prescribed in the Torah after the Jews of Madīnah brought the case to him rather than concealing it as some of their scholars had wished. Commentary: Ibn Abī Awfā’s honest admission “I do not know” whether this occurred before or after the revelation of Sūrat al-Nūr — which contains the separate legislation of liʿān and the ḥadd for zinā among Muslims — reflects the careful precision the early narrators exercised in not asserting chronological details beyond their actual knowledge, a hallmark of scholarly integrity (amānah) in the transmission of ḥadīth.
