Three-Narrator Ahadith 230
ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported by al-Hajarī, who said:
I went out for the funeral of the daughter of ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā, who was riding his black mule. The women told the man leading it, “Bring him in front of the bier,” which he did. Then I heard [Ibn Abī Awfā] say to him, “Where is the bier?” He said, “Behind you.” He did this once or twice, then said, “Did I not forbid you to put me in front of the bier?” He then heard a woman striking her face in mourning and said, “Enough! Did I not forbid you this? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid wailing eulogies, though each of you may shed as many tears as she wishes.” When the bier was set down, he came forward and pronounced four takbīrs over it, then paused briefly; some of those present, thinking he had forgotten, said “Subḥān Allāh,” so he turned to them and said, “Did you think I was going to pronounce a fifth takbīr?” They said, “Yes.” He said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pause briefly after the fourth takbīr.” After the burial he sat, and we sat with him, and he was asked about the flesh of domesticated donkeys. He said, “On the day of Khaybar, domesticated donkeys came out from the village, and the people fell upon them and slaughtered them, and the pots were already boiling with some of the meat, when the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, ‘Pour it out,’ so we poured it out.” [Al-Hajarī added:] I saw ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā wearing a green silk cloak.

Musnad Aḥmad 230

due to the weakness of ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim, one of its transmitters.
Chain: ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim ibn Ṣuhayb al-Wāsiṭī → Ibrāhīm ibn Muslim al-Hajarī → [witnessed] ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim al-Wāsiṭī: criticized by the majority of ḥadīth critics as ḍaʿīf despite his personal piety and worship, on account of frequent errors in his narrations. Died 201 AH. (2) Ibrāhīm ibn Muslim al-Hajarī: also criticized by several critics as layyin al-ḥadīth (weak), though the stated cause of weakness here, per the source, is specifically ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim. (3) Ibn Abī Awfā: ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā; Companion (Ṣaḥābī); one of the Companions of the Tree (Bayʿat al-Riḍwān) and the last Companion to die in Kūfah, 86–87 AH. Takhrīj: elements of this narration are corroborated through sounder chains elsewhere — the ruling on pausing after the fourth takbīr in the funeral prayer is found in similar form in Abū Dāwūd (3197) and al-Bayhaqī’s al-Sunan al-Kubrā, and the prohibition of wailing eulogies (niyāḥah) is firmly established in al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Janāʾiz (1297, 1298) and Muslim (934), from Umm ʿAṭiyyah. Commentary: Although this particular chain is weak, its component rulings — moderation in grief, the prohibition of wailing, and pausing briefly after the fourth funeral takbīr — are each independently well attested; the weak chain here mainly affects confidence in this specific eyewitness account of Ibn Abī Awfā’s daughter’s funeral rather than the underlying legal content.
