مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 228
ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
We came upon [domesticated] donkeys leaving the village, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Empty out the cooking pots, [contents] and all.” I mentioned this to Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, who said, “He only forbade them because they used to eat filth.”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى قَالَ: أَصَبْنَا حُمُرًا خَارِجًا مِنَ الْقَرْيَةِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «أَكْفِئُوا الْقُدُورَ بِمَا فِيهَا» فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِسَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فَقَالَ: «إِنَّمَا نَهَى عَنْهَا لِأَنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَأْكُلُ الْعَذِرَةَ»

Chain: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah → Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī → ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him), with an added remark by Saʿīd ibn Jubayr embedded in al-Shaybānī’s own report. (2) al-Shaybānī: Abū Isḥāq Sulaymān ibn Abī Sulaymān al-Shaybānī (d. 140 AH); thiqah, a reliable narrator of Kūfah. (3) Ibn Abī Awfā: ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā; Companion (Ṣaḥābī); one of the Companions of the Tree (Bayʿat al-Riḍwān) and the last Companion to die in Kūfah, 86–87 AH. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Dhabāʾiḥ (5527, 5528); Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣayd (1937); Abū Dāwūd (3808). Commentary: This is one of several reports establishing the prohibition of eating the flesh of domesticated donkeys, given at the Battle of Khaybar; Saʿīd ibn Jubayr’s added remark reflects one of several juristic explanations offered for the prohibition (namely, ritual impurity from their diet), though other scholars held the prohibition to be absolute regardless of cause.
