مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 227
ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him) reported, as narrated by Abū Yaʿfūr:
I went to Ibn Abī Awfā to ask him about locusts. He said, “I took part in six expeditions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during which we would eat locusts.”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَعْفُورٍ، عَبْدِيٌّ مَوْلًى لَهُمْ قَالَ: ذَهَبْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْجَرَادِ، قَالَ: «غَزَوْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ سِتَّ غَزَوَاتٍ نَأْكُلُ الْجَرَادَ»

Chain: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah → Abū Yaʿfūr al-ʿAbdī → ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Sufyān: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah ibn Mīmūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī (d. 198 AH); thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. (2) Abū Yaʿfūr al-ʿAbdī: a freedman by walāʾ of the tribe of ʿAbd al-Qays, graded thiqah by the critics. (3) Ibn Abī Awfā: ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā; Companion (Ṣaḥābī); one of the Companions of the Tree (Bayʿat al-Riḍwān) and the last Companion to die in Kūfah, 86–87 AH. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Dhabāʾiḥ wa-l-Ṣayd, bāb akl al-jarād (5495); Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣayd wa-l-Dhabāʾiḥ (1952); Abū Dāwūd (3812); al-Tirmidhī (1821); Ibn Mājah (3218). Commentary: This ḥadīth is the primary evidence relied upon by the fuqahāʾ for the permissibility of eating locusts without requiring a specific method of slaughter, since they do not possess flowing blood in the manner of land animals subject to the rules of dhabḥ.
