مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 226
ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, and he ﷺ said to a man, “Dismount and mix us some sawīq.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, the sun [has not yet set].” He ﷺ said, “Dismount and mix it for us.” So he mixed it and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank. Having drunk, he ﷺ gestured with his hand toward the night and said, “When you see the night coming from here, then the fasting person has broken his fast.”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَبِي أَوْفَى قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ، فَقَالَ لِرَجُلٍ: «انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا». قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، الشَّمْسُ. قَالَ: «انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا». فَجَدَحَ، فَشَرِبَ، فَلَمَّا شَرِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ نَحْوَ اللَّيْلِ: «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ اللَّيْلَ قَدْ أَقْبَلَ مِنْ هَاهُنَا، فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ»

Rijāl: (1) Sufyān: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah ibn Mīmūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī (d. 198 AH); thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. (2) Al-Shaybānī: Abū Isḥāq Sulaymān ibn Abī Sulaymān al-Shaybānī (d. 140 AH); thiqah, a reliable narrator of Kūfah. (3) Ibn Abī Awfā: ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā; Companion (Ṣaḥābī); one of the Companions of the Tree (Bayʿat al-Riḍwān) and the last Companion to die in Kūfah, 86–87 AH. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ṣawm (1943, 1959); Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣiyām (1101).
