مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 225
ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey during the month of Ramaḍān. When the sun set, he ﷺ said, “Dismount, so-and-so, and mix us some sawīq.” The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is still daylight.” He ﷺ said, “Dismount and mix it.” He did so and handed it to him, and he ﷺ drank. Having drunk, he ﷺ gestured with his hand toward the west and said, “When the sun sets here, and night comes from there, then the fasting person has broken his fast.”

حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّيْبَانِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ، فَلَمَّا غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَالَ: «انْزِلْ يَا فُلَانُ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا» قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، عَلَيْكَ نَهَارٌ. قَالَ: «انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ». قَالَ: فَفَعَلَ فَنَاوَلَهُ فَشَرِبَ، فَلَمَّا شَرِبَ أَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى الْمَغْرِبِ فَقَالَ: «إِذَا غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ هَاهُنَا، جَاءَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَاهُنَا، فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ»

Chain: Hushaym ibn Bushayr → Abū Isḥāq Sulaymān al-Shaybānī → ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Hushaym: Hushaym ibn Bushayr al-Wāsiṭī (d. 183 AH); thiqah thabt, though he practiced a subtle tadlīs (al-taswiyah); accepted where he states he was informed, as here. (2) Al-Shaybānī, Abū Isḥāq Sulaymān ibn Abī Sulaymān: thiqah, one of the reliable narrators of Kūfah. Died 140 AH. (3) ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā: a Companion, ʿAlqamah ibn Khālid al-Aslamī by lineage; he was among the Companions of the Tree (Bayʿat al-Riḍwān) and is reported to be the last Companion to die in Kūfah, in 86 or 87 AH. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ṣawm, bāb matā yaḥillu fiṭr al-ṣāʾim (1941, 1942); Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣiyām (1101); Abū Dāwūd (2351); al-Tirmidhī (698); Ibn Mājah (1698). Commentary: This ḥadīth is a primary text establishing that the fast breaks with the setting of the sun regardless of the lingering brightness of dusk, and that one should not delay breaking the fast on the assumption that daylight persists — reinforcing the Sunnah of hastening to break the fast (‘ajjala al-fiṭr).
