مُسْنَدُ عَطِيَّةَ الْقُرَظِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 223
ʿAṭiyyah al-Quraẓī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I was brought before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of [the campaign against] Banū Qurayẓah, and they were uncertain about me [whether I had reached puberty]. So the Prophet ﷺ ordered that they assess whether I had yet grown pubic hair. They examined me and found that I had not, so he ﷺ released me and placed me among the captives.

its transmitters trustworthy.
Chain: Hushaym ibn Bushayr → ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr → ʿAṭiyyah al-Quraẓī (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Hushaym ibn Bushayr al-Wāsiṭī: thiqah thabt, though frequently practiced tadlīs of a subtle kind (tadlīs al-taswiyah); where he states clearly that he was informed (akhbaranā), as here, the report is accepted without reservation. Died 183 AH. (2) ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr al-Lakhmī al-Kūfī: thiqah, though he lived to a very advanced age and his memory changed somewhat toward the end of his life, and he too was occasionally noted for tadlīs. Died 136 AH, having lived over a century. (3) ʿAṭiyyah al-Quraẓī: a young member of the Jewish tribe of Banū Qurayẓah at the time of their siege in 5 AH; he embraced Islam and is counted among the Tābiʿūn on account of his youth at the time, being spared from execution precisely because he had not yet reached puberty. Takhrīj: this narration is recorded by Abū Dāwūd, Kitāb al-Ḥudūd (4404); al-Tirmidhī (1584); al-Nasāʾī (3430); and Ibn Mājah (2541), all through similar chains from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr. Commentary: This ḥadīth is a foundational text for the fuqahāʾ in establishing the physical signs (ʿalāmāt al-bulūgh) used to determine legal majority — namely, the growth of pubic hair — particularly in ambiguous cases where age alone cannot be verified, as was the case for the captives of Banū Qurayẓah following Saʿd ibn Muʿādh’s judgment against the tribe’s combatants.
