Three-Narrator Ahadith 207
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Abū Mūsā [al-Ashʿarī] asked the Prophet ﷺ to provide him [and others] with riding mounts, but caught him at a time when he was occupied with something else. He said, “By Allah, I will not give you any mounts.” When [Abū Mūsā] turned to leave, the Prophet ﷺ called him and provided him with mounts. Abū Mūsā said, “Messenger of Allah, you swore that you would not give us any mounts.” He said, “And I now swear that I will give you mounts.” And he gave them mounts.

Musnad Aḥmad 207

Chain: Aḥmad → Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd ibn Farūkh al-Qaṭṭān al-Baṣrī (d. 198 AH): Thiqa mutqin ḥāfiẓ imām; the foremost ḥadīth critic of his generation. (2) Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl: Ḥumayd ibn Abī Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī (d. 142 AH); thiqa. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion (Ṣaḥābī); the Prophet's ﷺ servant for ten years; d. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Aḥmad (3/179); al-Bukhārī (6623, 6649, 6718); Muslim (1649). The ḥadīth illustrates the legal principle of kaffārat al-yamīn (expiation for an oath) and shows that the Prophet ﷺ willingly broke his hasty oath when doing so served the believers, expiating it by the charitable act itself or by the separate expiation.
