مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 208
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
A funeral procession passed by the Prophet ﷺ. People praised the deceased and kept praising him, so the Prophet ﷺ said, “It is affirmed [Paradise].” Then another funeral procession passed by, and people spoke ill of the deceased and kept saying bad things about him, so the Prophet ﷺ said, “It is affirmed [Hellfire]. You are Allah’s witnesses on earth.”

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ جَنَازَةً مَرَّتْ بِالنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقِيلَ لَهَا خَيْرًا، وَتَتَابَعَتِ الْأَلْسُنُ لَهَا بِالْخَيْرِ. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «وَجَبَتْ». ثُمَّ مَرَّتْ جَنَازَةٌ أُخْرَى، فَقَالُوا لَهَا شَرًّا، وَتَتَابَعَتِ الْأَلْسُنُ لَهَا بِالشَّرِّ. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «وَجَبَتْ، أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ».

The unanimous testimony of the community of believers—based on manifest piety or wickedness known during one’s lifetime—carries special evidential weight. This does not entail knowledge of the Unseen about a specific person’s fate, but rather that the collective witness of the righteous community reflects divine wisdom; the individual’s own deeds are the ultimate determinant.
