Three-Narrator Ahadith 197
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
There was a man who used to write [the revelation] for the Prophet ﷺ, and he had read al-Baqarah and Āl ʿImrān. When a man among us had read al-Baqarah and Āl ʿImrān, he became eminent in our eyes, that is, he was held in high regard. The Prophet ﷺ would dictate to him ghafūran raḥīman (Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful), but he would write ʿalīman ḥakīman (All-Knowing, All-Wise). The Prophet ﷺ would say to him, “Write such and such; write as you wish.” And he would dictate to him ʿalīman ḥakīman, and the man would say, “Shall I write samīʿan baṣīran (All-Hearing, All-Seeing)?” and he would say, “Write as you wish.” Then that man apostatized from Islam and joined the polytheists, saying, “I know Muḥammad better than you do; I used to write whatever I wished.” Then that man died, and the Prophet ﷺ said, “The earth will not accept him.” Anas said: Abū Ṭalḥah (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that he came to the land in which that man had died and found him cast out [upon its surface]. Abū Ṭalḥah asked, “What is the matter with this man?” They said, “We have buried him repeatedly, but the earth would not accept him.” Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 197
