Three-Narrator Ahadith 196
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not marvel at anyone until you see how his life is sealed, for the doer may act for a time of his life, or a while of his age, with a righteous deed such that, were he to die upon it, he would enter Paradise; then he changes and does an evil deed. And a servant may act for a while of his age with an evil deed such that, were he to die upon it, he would enter the Fire; then he changes and does a righteous deed. And when Allah intends good for a servant, He employs him before his death.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, how does He employ him?” He said, “He grants him success in a righteous deed, then takes his soul upon it.”

Chain: Aḥmad → Yazīd ibn Hārūn → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Yazīd ibn Hārūn ibn Zādhān al-Sulamī al-Wāsiṭī, Abū Khālid (d. 206 AH): thiqa mutqin ʿābid; the imām of Wāsiṭ in his generation. (2) Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, a mudallis, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Tirmidhī (2142), graded ḥasan, with the wording on Allah employing His servant before death; the principle that deeds are judged by their endings is affirmed in al-Bukhārī (6607); Aḥmad (12214). The report establishes that reward turns upon a person's final state, ḥusn al-khātima, so that neither a present record of obedience is ground for security nor a present record of disobedience ground for despair. The instruction not to marvel at anyone until his end is known also restrains the community from premature judgement of one another.
