مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 188
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Who will go and see what has happened to Abū Jahl?’ Ibn Masʿūd set out and found him: the two sons of ʿAfrāʾ had struck him until he had fallen to his knees. He grabbed him by the beard and said: ‘Are you Abū Jahl?’ He said: ‘And is there anything nobler than a man whom his people have killed, or whom you have killed?’”

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ: «مَنْ يَنْظُرُ مَا فَعَلَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ؟» قَالَ: فَانْطَلَقَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، فَوَجَدَهُ قَدْ ضَرَبَهُ ابْنَا عَفْرَاءَ حَتَّى بَرَكَ. فَأَخَذَ بِلِحْيَتِهِ وَقَالَ: أَنْتَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ؟ قَالَ: «وَهَلْ فَوْقَ رَجُلٍ قَتَلَهُ قَوْمُهُ أَوْ قَتَلْتُمُوهُ؟»

Chain: Aḥmad → Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAdiyy → Sulaymān al-Taymī → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAdiyy al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī (d. 194 AH): thiqa. (2) Sulaymān ibn Ṭarkhān al-Taymī al-Baṣrī: thiqa ʿābid, d. 143 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (3962); Muslim (1800); Aḥmad (12304). This is an independent transmission of the same incident with one word differing, baraka, that he had sunk to his knees, in place of barada, that he had gone cold and still, and with the two halves of Abū Jahl's reply reversed. Variations of this order, preserved rather than smoothed away, are among the features that give the thulāthiyyāt their value as a record of how a single event reached the collector by more than one short route.
