مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 187
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Who will go and see what has happened to Abū Jahl?’ Ibn Masʿūd set out and found that the two sons of ʿAfrāʾ had struck him until he lay still. He grabbed him by the beard and said: ‘Are you Abū Jahl?’ He said: ‘And is there anything nobler than a man whom you, or his own people, have killed?’”

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا التَّيْمِيُّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ: «مَنْ يَنْظُرُ مَا فَعَلَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ؟» فَانْطَلَقَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، فَوَجَدَ ابْنَيْ عَفْرَاءَ قَدْ ضَرَبَاهُ حَتَّى بَرَدَ، فَأَخَذَ بِلِحْيَتِهِ فَقَالَ: أَنْتَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ؟ فَقَالَ: «وَهَلْ فَوْقَ رَجُلٍ قَتَلْتُمُوهُ أَوْ قَتَلَهُ قَوْمُهُ؟»

Chain: Aḥmad → Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān → Sulaymān al-Taymī → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān al-Baṣrī: thiqa mutqin, d. 198 AH. (2) Sulaymān ibn Ṭarkhān al-Taymī al-Baṣrī: thiqa ʿābid, d. 143 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (3962); Muslim (1800); Aḥmad (12143). Abū Jahl, ʿAmr ibn Hishām, was struck down at Badr in 2 AH by the two sons of ʿAfrāʾ, Muʿādh and Muʿawwidh, both youths of the Anṣār, and Ibn Masʿūd found him at his last breath and finished him. His reply, which turns on the point that death at the hands of one's own people is no disgrace to a chief, was noted by the commentators for the pride he carried to the end.
