Three-Narrator Ahadith 180
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the time of the Fajr prayer... He commanded Bilāl when dawn first broke to call the iqāmah for prayer. Then the next day he waited until the sky brightened considerably, and then said: ‘Where is the one who asked about the time of the morning prayer? The time is between these two [limits].’”

Musnad Aḥmad 180

Chain: Aḥmad → Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayya → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUlayya al-Baṣrī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ, d. 193 AH. (2) Ḥumayd ibn Abī Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Muslim (614); al-Nasāʾī (523); al-Tirmidhī (149); Aḥmad (12119). The report fixes the window of the dawn prayer from the breaking of the true dawn, al-fajr al-ṣādiq, until the sky has grown light shortly before sunrise, and it illustrates the Prophet's ﷺ method of teaching by demonstration across two successive days rather than by verbal definition alone. The false dawn, al-fajr al-kādhib, a vertical shaft of light that fades, does not begin the time.
