مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 179
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“The hair of the Prophet ﷺ reached to the halfway point of his ears.”

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: «كَانَ شَعْرُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى أَنْصَافِ أُذُنَيْهِ».

Chain: Aḥmad → Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayya → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUlayya al-Baṣrī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ, d. 193 AH. (2) Ḥumayd ibn Abī Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (5901); Muslim (2338); Aḥmad (12118). Descriptions of the length of the Prophet's ﷺ hair vary across the reports, some placing it at the lobes of the ears, others at the shoulders, and others between the two. Ibn Ḥajar reconciles them by referring the difference to different periods and to the interval since it was last trimmed. The technical terms used are wafra for hair reaching the lobes, limma for hair reaching the shoulders, and jumma for what falls beyond them. See Fatḥ al-Bārī (10/352).
