Chain: Aḥmad → Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayya → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUlayya al-Baṣrī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ, d. 193 AH. (2) Ḥumayd ibn Abī Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (696); Muslim (454); al-Nasāʾī (969); Aḥmad (12116). The report records that the settled norm was moderation in the length of the prayer, neither curtailed nor drawn out, and that ʿUmar's lengthening of Fajr was an extension beyond the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and Abū Bakr. It is cited in the discussions of the sūras recommended for the dawn prayer, which is the prayer the Sunnah singles out for longer recitation.
