مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 177
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ would say:
“O Allah, I seek refuge with You from incapacity and laziness, and from cowardice and decrepit old age, and from miserliness and the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the trial of life and death.”

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ».

Chain: Aḥmad → Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUlayya → Sulaymān al-Taymī → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUlayya al-Baṣrī (d. 193 AH): thiqa ḥāfiẓ; among the foremost and most trusted teachers of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal. He preferred to be called Ibn Ibrāhīm, ʿUlayya being his mother. (2) Sulaymān ibn Ṭarkhān al-Taymī al-Baṣrī: thiqa ʿābid, d. 143 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (2823) and (6367); Muslim (2706); Aḥmad (12113). The supplication pairs failings of will with failings of body: al-ʿajz, inability, with al-kasal, disinclination despite ability; and al-jubn, cowardice, with al-bukhl, withholding of wealth, the two forms of retreat from what is asked of a person. It is among the supplications the Prophet ﷺ repeated most often and is recommended morning and evening.
