مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 173
Al-Mukhtār ibn Fulful reported:
“I asked Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) about drinking from vessels. He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited pitch-coated vessels, and said: Every intoxicant is forbidden.’ I asked: ‘What is a muzaffata?’ He said: ‘It is a tar-sealed vessel.’”

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْمُخْتَارَ بْنَ فُلْفُلٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ عَنِ الشُّرْبِ فِي الْأَوْعِيَةِ، فَقَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْمُزَفَّتَةِ، وَقَالَ: «كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ». قُلْتُ: وَمَا الْمُزَفَّتَةُ؟ قَالَ: «الْمُقَيَّرَةُ».

Chain: Aḥmad → ʿAbdallāh ibn Idrīs → al-Mukhtār ibn Fulful → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) ʿAbdallāh ibn Idrīs al-Awdī al-Kūfī (d. 192 AH): thiqa faqīh ʿābid; among the notable teachers of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal. (2) Al-Mukhtār ibn Fulful: ṣadūq; relied upon by Muslim. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Muslim (1733); Aḥmad (12099). The prohibition of pitch-coated vessels, al-muzaffata, also called al-muqayyara, rested upon the risk that fermentation would run ahead unnoticed and the drink become intoxicating. Many scholars hold that the ruling on the vessels was later relaxed once the community understood the underlying cause, the enduring rule being the second clause, that every intoxicant is forbidden, which is mutawātir and agreed upon.
