Three-Narrator Ahadith 172
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“The Prophet ﷺ entered a ruined enclosure belonging to Banū al-Najjār as if to relieve himself. He then came out to us startled and alarmed, and said: ‘Were it not that you would stop burying one another, I would have asked Allah to let you hear of the torment of the people of the graves as I hear it.’”

Musnad Aḥmad 172

Chain: Aḥmad → Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna, reporting that Qāsim al-Raḥḥāl heard Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna al-Hilālī al-Makkī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh, d. 198 AH. (2) Qāsim al-Raḥḥāl: a Tābiʿī who related from Anas; classified maqbūl, that is, accepted where corroborated. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Muslim (2867) records a variant through a different chain; Aḥmad (12096). The reason given for withholding the sound, that people would cease to bury their dead, joins mercy to disclosure: the Prophet ﷺ affirmed the reality of the punishment of the barzakh while sparing the community what it could not bear to hear. Reports of the punishment of the grave are received by the Sunnah as certain, and ahl al-sunna affirm them without inquiring into their modality.
