مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 165
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never grieved as deeply as he grieved for the seventy who were killed at Biʾr Maʿūnah.”

قُرِئَ عَلَى سُفْيَانَ: سَمِعْتُ عَاصِمًا قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا يَقُولُ: «مَا وَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَ مَا وَجَدَ عَلَى السَّبْعِينَ الَّذِينَ أُصِيبُوا بِبِئْرِ مَعُونَةَ».

Chain: Aḥmad, [the text having been read aloud to] Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna → ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Note: The opening phrase quriʾa ʿalā Sufyān, “it was read to Sufyān,” indicates that the report reached Aḥmad by the method of ʿarḍ, in which the student reads the text aloud to the shaykh for his confirmation, a recognised and fully valid mode of transmission ranked by most scholars alongside direct dictation. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna al-Hilālī al-Makkī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh, d. 198 AH. (2) ʿĀṣim ibn Sulaymān al-Aḥwal al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (4091); Muslim (677); Aḥmad (12088). This is a second transmission of the preceding report, received by way of ʿarḍ rather than dictation, and specifying the number of those killed as seventy.
