مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 164
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never grieved over an expedition as he grieved over them; they were called the Qurrāʾ, the reciters of the Qurʾān.” Sufyān [ibn ʿUyayna] said: “Regarding them was revealed [the passage]: ‘Convey to our people on our behalf that we have met our Lord and He is pleased with us and we are pleased with Him.’” Sufyān was asked: “About whom was it revealed?” He said: “About the people of Biʾr Maʿūnah.”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: «مَا وَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى سَرِيَّةٍ مَا وَجَدَ عَلَيْهِمْ، كَانُوا يُسَمَّوْنَ الْقُرَّاءَ». قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: «نَزَلَ فِيهِمْ: ‹بَلِّغُوا قَوْمَنَا عَنَّا أَنَّا قَدْ رَضِينَا وَرَضِيَ عَنَّا›». قِيلَ لِسُفْيَانَ: فِيمَنْ نَزَلَتْ؟ قَالَ: «فِي أَهْلِ بِئْرِ مَعُونَةَ».

Chain: Aḥmad → Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna → ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna al-Hilālī al-Makkī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh, d. 198 AH. (2) ʿĀṣim ibn Sulaymān al-Aḥwal al-Baṣrī, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (d. 142 AH): thiqa; a muḥaddith of Baṣra. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (4088) and (4091); Muslim (677); Aḥmad (12087). The massacre at Biʾr Maʿūnah in 4 AH, in which a party of reciters of the Qurʾān sent out to instruct a tribe was killed by treachery, affected the Prophet ﷺ more than any other loss, and he invoked the qunūt al-nāzila against the tribes responsible for a full month afterwards. The verse said to have been revealed concerning them, “Convey to our people that we have met our Lord,” is reported by the majority to have been recited for a time and then withdrawn from the muṣḥaf.
