Three-Narrator Ahadith 161
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“I and an orphan who was with us in the house, Sufyān said on one occasion: ‘in our house,’ prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had come to visit them in their home. Umm Sulaym prayed behind us.”

Chain: Aḥmad → Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna → Isḥāq ibn ʿAbdallāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥa → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ibn Abī ʿImrān al-Hilālī al-Makkī (d. 198 AH): thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh; the imām of Makkah in his generation and a senior teacher of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal. (2) Isḥāq ibn ʿAbdallāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥa al-Anṣārī al-Madanī: thiqa thabt; nephew of Anas ibn Mālik through his father ʿAbdallāh, the son of Umm Sulaym by Abū Ṭalḥa, and a prolific transmitter from his uncle. (3) Anas ibn Mālik al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī: Companion; he served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years and died at Baṣra ca. 93 AH, the last of the Companions to die there. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (727); Muslim (658); Abū Dāwūd (612); Aḥmad (12081). The narration establishes that a woman may join a congregation in a row of her own behind the men, and that the Prophet ﷺ would pray voluntary prayers in the homes of his Companions. The house in question was that of Umm Sulaym, and Anas, then a boy, stood in a row with the orphan while his mother stood alone behind them, which is also cited as evidence that two persons form a row rather than standing level with the imām. See Fatḥ al-Bārī (2/173).
