Three-Narrator Ahadith 16
Jābir (رضي الله عنه) reported:
“We were with Abū ʿUbayda, sent by the Prophet (ﷺ) with him on an expedition. Our provisions ran out. We came across a large whale (ḥūt) that the sea had cast ashore. We wanted to eat from it, but Abū ʿUbayda initially forbade us [fearing it was carrion]. Then he said: ‘We are the envoys of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) and we are in the way of Allāh; eat.’ So we ate from it for several days. When we returned, we told the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) about it and he said: ‘If any of it remains with you, send some to us.’”

isnād meets the conditions of Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 14256).
Isnād: Imām Aḥmad ← Hushaym ibn Bashīr ← Abū al-Zubayr ← Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh. Rijāl: Hushaym ibn Bashīr al-Wāsiṭī (d. 183 AH): thiqah ḥāfiẓ; known for tadlīs, but here he uses akhbaranā (he informed us), an explicit form of transmission that removes any ambiguity. Abū al-Zubayr Muḥammad ibn Muslim al-Makkī (d. 128 AH): ṣadūq, also known for tadlīs; his transmissions from Jābir are well-authenticated. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī (d. 78 AH): eminent Ṣaḥābī; participated in the pledge of al-ʿAqaba and most of the major battles; one of the most prolific narrators of ḥadīth, with over 1,500 traditions reported from him. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, no. 4361; Muslim, no. 1935; Abū Dāwūd, no. 3836; al-Tirmidhī, no. 1468. The Prophet’s (ﷺ) statement approving the eating and asking for some indicates the permissibility of consuming sea creatures that die naturally and wash ashore; the Prophet’s request also shows his gracious character in wishing to partake in what his companions had eaten.
