Three-Narrator Ahadith 15
ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār said:
“I heard Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) say: ‘The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: “Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding livestock or for hunting, shall have two qīrāṭ deducted from his reward every day.”‘“

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا إِلَّا كَلْبَ مَاشِيَةٍ أَوْ كَلْبَ قَنْصٍ، نَقَصَ مِنْ أَجْرِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ.»

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 4944).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār ← ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (same chain as Ḥadīth 1). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ. ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār: thiqah. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar: Companion. A qīrāṭ is a unit of weight approximately equal to the weight of a grain of barley; here it refers to a portion of the reward of good deeds. A parallel narration from Abū Hurayra in Muslim specifies one qīrāṭ rather than two; scholars reconcile this by noting that the two-qīrāṭ penalty applies outside cities and the one-qīrāṭ inside, or that the penalty increases with the degree of harm the dog poses to others. Exceptions are three categories of dog: livestock-herding dogs, hunting dogs, and, according to some narrations, dogs for guarding crops and farmland.
