Three-Narrator Ahadith 154
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Prophet ﷺ fell from a horse and suffered abrasions on his right side. We went to visit him and when the time of prayer came, he led us in prayer sitting down, and we prayed sitting. When he concluded the prayer he said: “The imam is appointed only to be followed. When he says Allāhu Akbar, say Allāhu Akbar; when he bows, bow.” Sufyān added on one occasion: “when he prostrates, prostrate; and when he says Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah, say Rabbanā wa laka'l-ḥamd; and if he prays sitting, then all of you pray sitting.”

Musnad Aḥmad 154

Chain: Aḥmad → Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna → Muḥammad ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī [who heard it directly] from Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna al-Hilālī al-Makkī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām, d. 198 AH. (2) Muḥammad ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī al-Madanī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām, d. 124 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (689); Muslim (411); Aḥmad (12074). The incident is dated by the commentators to the month of Ṣafar in 5 AH. The narration is the principal text on following the imam in every act of the prayer and on praying behind a seated imam. The Ḥanbalī position, resting on this report, is that the congregation sits when the imam sits because of an illness that arose after he had led them standing; Mālik held the congregation prays standing, while al-Shāfiʿī considered the ruling abrogated by the Prophet's ﷺ final illness, when he led the prayer seated and Abū Bakr and the people stood. The notation that Sufyān added the remainder on a separate occasion is a mark of Aḥmad's precision in recording exactly what he heard on each hearing.
