مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 153
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not sever [family and social] ties, do not harbor hatred for one another, do not turn your backs on one another, do not envy one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers. It is not permissible for a Muslim to abandon his [Muslim] brother for more than three days.”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، سَمِعَهُ مِنْ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَا تَقَاطَعُوا، وَلَا تَبَاغَضُوا، وَلَا تَدَابَرُوا، وَلَا تَحَاسَدُوا، وَكُونُوا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ إِخْوَانًا، وَلَا يَحِلُّ لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ أَخَاهُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ».

Chain: Aḥmad → Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna → Muḥammad ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī [who heard it directly] from Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna al-Hilālī al-Makkī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām, d. 198 AH. (2) Muḥammad ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī al-Madanī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām, d. 124 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (6065); Muslim (2558); Aḥmad (12073). The explicit statement that al-Zuhrī heard this from Anas directly (samiʿahu min Anas) removes any question of interruption in the chain. The text is among the most comprehensive on the ethics of brotherhood, joining four prohibitions, severance, hatred, mutual turning away, and envy, to a positive command, and closing with the ruling limiting estrangement to three days. Scholars except from this limit the case of an estrangement undertaken for a religious cause, such as boycotting one persisting in open wrongdoing, and note that greeting with salām is what ends the estrangement.
