ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon his arrival in Madinah and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I will ask you about three things that only a prophet can know.” He said, “Ask.” He said: “What is the first sign of the Hour? What is the first food that the people of Paradise will eat? And how does a child come to resemble either its father or its mother?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: “Jibrīl just now informed me of these.” ʿAbdullāh said, “That one, he is the enemy of the Jews among the angels.” The Prophet ﷺ then said: “As for the first sign of the Hour, it is a fire that will emerge from the east and drive people toward the west. As for the first food the people of Paradise will eat, it is the additional lobe of a fish's liver. And as for the child's resemblance to one parent or another: if the man's fluid precedes the woman's, the child resembles him; and if the woman's fluid precedes the man's, the child resembles her.” ʿAbdullāh said, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah.” He then said: “O Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a people given to slander. If they hear of my conversion, they will slander me before you. So send for them and ask them about me first.” He sent for them and asked: “What manner of man is ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām among you?” They said: “He is the best of us and the son of the best of us; our scholar and the son of our scholars; the most learned of us and the son of the most learned.” He said: “What if he were to embrace Islam, would you follow?” They said: “May Allah protect him from that!” Then ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām came out and declared: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.” They said: “He is the worst of us and the son of the worst; the most ignorant of us and the son of the most ignorant.” ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām said: “This is exactly what I feared from you.” Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 148
