Three-Narrator Ahadith 147
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Abū Mūsā [al-Ashʿarī] asked the Prophet ﷺ to provide him with a mount. The Prophet ﷺ was preoccupied at the time and said, “By Allah, I will not provide you with a mount.” But when Abū Mūsā turned to leave, he called him back and gave him a mount. Abū Mūsā said, “O Messenger of Allah, you swore you would not provide me with one.” He replied, “And now I swear that I will provide you with one.”

Musnad Aḥmad 147

Chain: Aḥmad → Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī: thiqa thabt, d. 194 AH. (2) Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (6622) and (4385); Muslim (1649); Aḥmad (12056). The report is a foundational text on the expiation of oaths (kaffārat al-yamīn). Muslim's wording adds the Prophet's ﷺ statement: “By Allah, I do not swear an oath and then see something better than it without expiating for my oath and doing that which is better.” The jurists infer that when the better course lies in breaking the oath, breaking it is preferred and the expiation named in Q. 5:89 is due. Abū Mūsā ʿAbdullāh ibn Qays al-Ashʿarī (d. ca. 44 AH) was among the Companions renowned for the beauty of his recitation of the Qurʾān.
