مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 138
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of what you may use for treatment is cupping and marine costus, and do not torment your children by pressing [the back of] their throats with your fingers.”

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «خَيْرُ مَا تَدَاوَيْتُمْ بِهِ الْحِجَامَةُ وَالْقُسْطُ الْبَحْرِيُّ، وَلَا تُعَذِّبُوا صِبْيَانَكُمْ بِالْغَمْزِ».

Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī: thiqa thabt, d. 194 AH. (2) Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (5696); Muslim (2214); Aḥmad (12045). Al-qusṭ al-baḥrī, marine or white costus (Saussurea costus), is an aromatic root long used in Arabian medicine and distinguished from the more pungent Indian black variety, al-qusṭ al-hindī; the two are mentioned together in other narrations. Al-ghamz refers to a folk remedy for the childhood swelling known as al-ʿudhra, in which the soft palate or tonsils were pressed upward with the finger; the Prophet ﷺ forbade it as needless pain and directed instead to treatment by costus.
